"Run away with me, love, and marry me."FINAL DECISION: I loved the epic nature of the romance of this book. The book captures the Scottish Highlands and the characters are larger than life but human at the same time. Sometimes the larger historical story gets in the way of the romance, but those moments are dwarfed by the pure emotional journey of the story.THE STORY: Malcolm Mackenzie is the youngest son of the Duke of Kilmorgan spends hi time taking care of those he loves. This task is made more difficult by the unrest in the Scottish Highlands in the months preceding the Battle of Culloden and the divisions in his own family as a result. One night, Malcolm sees Lady Mary Lennox, the daugther of the English Earl of Wilfort. Engaged to an English Lord, Mary should be off limits to Malcolm. Instead, he approaches her the first night and asks her to run off and marry him. All of Malcolm's subsequent actions, are designed to make Mary his and keep her safe. In order for the two of them to be together, Mary and Mal have to survive the clashes that are occurring between the English and Scottish king supporters.OPINION: I loved the epic nature of this book. It feels grounded it its time and place -- 18th century Scotland. As a fan of the Mackenzie series based in the Victorian age, this book was a treat because it gives a history to the family. Malcolm is so caring and loving but also intelligent and determined. Mary is sweet, but not too sweet and her strength and perseverance that is shown as the book goes on gives the reader the sense that this woman is a survivor. These characters are not duplicates of their descendants but the characteristics that make their descendants so attractive and interesting. The other strengths of this story are the secondary characters and the depth of the historical story. These combined to make the story poignant and painful at times. The only negative to the book is that there is so much historical ground to deal with that at times it overwhelms the personal stories of Mary and Mal. That is a small complaint, however. This book has some of the epic feel of Outlander without at all duplicating that story. Fans of sexy Scottish heroes will have much to like here.WORTH MENTIONING: This book introduces characters who will be the subjects of their own books. I look forward to their books.CONNECTED BOOKS: THE STOLEN MACKENZIE BRIDE is the historical prequel to the Mackenzie Family series.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.
